This is the heart-stopping moment officers catch a child jumping from a window during a house fire in New Jersey.

The blaze broke out at a two-family home on Monday, August 25, around 9 am at 510 Prospect Avenue, Asbury Park.

Reports said the two residents downstairs had already evacuated, but an eight-year-old boy was stranded on the second floor. He had been left home alone, with his mother reportedly at work at the time.

Footage shows emergency responders urging the youngster to jump from the window, assuring him they would catch him.

Officer Dewitt Bacon and Officer John Walsh of the Asbury Park Police Department, along with resident Joseph Dunbar, caught the child safely as flames and thick smoke poured from the house.

Officer Bacon said: 'I'm just hoping that he trusts me enough to catch him, because I know, in his mind, there are two bad situations. He stays in there — it's smoke. He comes out - he might fall. He could also hurt himself.'

The child was immediately transferred to the Asbury Park Fire Department and taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and further evaluation.

Firefighters later managed to extinguish the blaze.

Monmouth County Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of the fire. Asbury Park Social Services and the American Red Cross also responded to assist residents with urgent needs and temporary housing.
