This is the nerve-wracking moment waves crashed onto a cargo ship's deck off the east coast of Australia.

Footage captured by Jared RM shows massive swells hitting the dry bulk carrier in the Indian Ocean on August 27.

The seawater can be seen flooding the deck, causing the choppy ocean to rock the vessel.

Jared said: 'We experienced a low-pressure system when we were crossing the ocean at that time.'

The region is known for its unpredictable weather patterns and sudden changes in sea conditions.

Low-pressure systems can lead to the formation of intense storms and rough seas, posing significant challenges to maritime navigation.

In 2020, the Singaporean cargo ship APL England reportedly lost 40 containers and had 74 more damaged after encountering rough seas about 73 kilometres southeast of Sydney, with debris, including medical supplies, washing up on nearby beaches.
