Furious expat shouts at bank clerk as account is closed over red tape
This is the shocking moment a furious expat screamed at a bank clerk after his account was closed.
The rampaging customer stormed a Bangkok Bank branch as restrictions were tightened for foreign customers in Thailand.
Footage shows the man bellowing at staff who tried to calm him down and explain the situation.
The expat was heard saying: 'Here's a passport! How long is this gonna be?'
Bangkok Bank, one of Thailand's largest commercial banks, began imposing stricter regulations for foreigners opening accounts.
Tourist visa holders are no longer allowed to open accounts due to the growing number of fraud cases involving tourist-held mule accounts.
The change now also requires foreigners to have a long-term visa to open a bank account.
The new rules are in line with the government's efforts to combat cybercrime and money laundering.
Since the measures may affect existing foreign customers, the bank urged those with concerns to contact them directly.
Bangkok Community Help Foundation, a local nonprofit, said on Facebook: 'Bangkok Bank, Thailand's largest commercial bank and a major financial institution in Southeast Asia, has reportedly begun freezing accounts and blocking bank cards of Russian nationals who do not meet new eligibility criteria — a move that started around May 25.
'The sudden restrictions have caught many tourists and expats off guard, leaving them scrambling to access their funds and seek explanations at branches across the country.'
The organisation advised customers who don't meet the requirements to immediately contact the bank.
