China: Chinese water sports gear makers ride wave of demand during summer
Storyline: Chinese water sports gear makers ride wave of demand during summer [Voice_over] In the final weeks of summer, Chinese firms that make water sports gear are still working around the clock to meet demand. At a stand-up paddleboard factory in east China's Yiwu, workers cut, heat-press and weld materials together to build about 700 boards per day, which are then shipped-off to destinations across the country. [Sound_bite] Cheng Jing, chairman, sports goods company: "Currently, we mainly ship to Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong Guangzhou, Shandong Weihai, Hainan, and other regions. These areas account for a significant portion of our shipments." [Voice_over] At the Yiwu International Trade Market, merchants selling water sports gear say they're swamped with orders. One merchant explained that innovative products are doing especially well. [Sound_bite] Lou Chaohua, merchant, Yiwu International Trade Market: "For example, this swimming ring comes with a sunshade canopy to block the sun. It also has a pocket, making it more comfortable for children to sit in. It's easy to get into, as this side can be opened. Younger children especially enjoy the rattle attached to it." [Voice_over] According to a government action plan released a few years ago, the country has been taking active steps to develop its outdoor sports industry, including water sports, with the goal of turning it into a 418 billion U.S. dollar market by the end of this year.
