BOLESLAW, POLAND - AUGUST 27, 2025: A major road near residential homes has been submerged as underground water levels continue to rise, authorities reported on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025 in Boleslaw, Poland.

In the nearby town of Olkusz, located about 50 kilometers west of Kraków, multiple sinkholes have opened in a former sand excavation zone left behind by mining operations. The region, once home to zinc and lead mining, is now facing severe flooding after the permanent shutdown of underground pumps.

Earlier scientific studies had predicted that up to 400 hectares of land could be inundated within 30 to 40 years after the pumps were shut down. However, the process has accelerated far beyond expectations.

The rising waters have already swamped a road built at a cost of millions, and the flood line is now edging dangerously close to residential areas.
