LIVONIA, Mich. — Livonia police used an innovative Grappler device to stop a stolen vehicle on Interstate 96 after assisting Michigan State Police, officials said.

The incident occurred near Farmington Road when officers deployed the Grappler, which wraps a high-strength net around a vehicle’s rear tire and axle to bring it to a controlled stop.

After being caught, the 27-year-old Brighton man driving the vehicle attempted to break free by reversing and accelerating, which ultimately ripped the rear axle off and permanently disabled the car. Two female passengers, ages 32 and 31, were also taken into custody.

No injuries were reported, and police said the safe stop highlighted their commitment to using innovative tools to protect the community.
