Gaza Freedom Flotilla prepares to sail with aid in bid to break Gaza blockade
SHOTLIST:
BARCELONA, SPAIN (AUGUST 29, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL)
1. VARIOUS OF DETAILS FROM MEETING OF GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA (GSF) ACTIVISTS / ACTIVISTS CLAPPING HANDS, CHANTING SLOGANS, LISTENING TO SPEECH / ACTOR AND ACTIVIST LIAM CUNNINGHAM ATTENDING TO MEETING, POSING FOR CAMERAS / CUNNINGHAM SPEAKING ON STAGE
2. (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH DELEGATION COORDINATOR OF GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA, HUSEYIN DURMAZ SAYING:
"Thousands of activists from 44 countries are preparing to set sail on August 31. Right now, we are at one of our ports in Europe, and our boats are ready. Day and night, engineers, captains, and activists have been working to prepare the ships for their mission. At the same time, training continues for the activists who will take part.
On August 31, the ships will depart from the ports. People of every color, language, religion, belief, and race have come together for one purpose — to break the blockade on Gaza. The people of Gaza have united humanity against oppression.
The road ahead is long. First, preparations are being made for what we may face and how we will act along the journey. Second, training is ongoing for possible scenarios in the event of Israeli intervention, covering every aspect.
Now we have dozens of ships. Participants from 44 countries will join, and thousands of activists will take part in this mission. If we also count the supporters on land, the number is much greater. Nearly 500,000 people have applied — the demand is incredible. Everyone now wants to break the blockade and stop the suffering in Gaza. Departures will take place from several European ports, as well as some in North Africa. All ships will gather in the Mediterranean and then head toward Gaza. Each country has formed its own commission to select delegates, and there is also a global delegation.
I say this: we must reach Gaza. Gaza is on the verge of collapse — almost wiped out. Just yesterday and today, Israel launched massive attacks. That is why we must reach Gaza before it is completely erased from the face of the earth. For this reason, I call on everyone — whether in media, as analysts, or simply watching on television, praying, and shedding tears — to support this flotilla and to make every effort to ensure its success.
As you know, any Israeli intervention will likely involve severe humiliation and aggression. They will try to provoke us to resist so they can accuse us of terrorism. For this reason, participants are receiving training — psychological preparation, media communication strategies, and more. Israel’s power in media manipulation is strong. They will ask provocative questions such as: ‘Are you terrorists? Why are you going to Israel?’ So training is being carried out on all levels.
For 15 days, people of many different nations will be living together in close quarters on the ships. Ethical, behavioral, and humanitarian training is also being provided for this. In short, all necessary training and scenario planning are underway to ensure this mission succeeds." BARCELONA, SPAIN - AUGUST 29: A coalition of pro-Palestinian groups is preparing to launch the Global Sumud Flotilla, an effort to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade, organizers said Saturday.
The upcoming flotilla brings together four initiatives: the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, the Global Movement to Gaza, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition and Sumud Nusantara. Dozens of ships carrying food and aid are expected to depart from Spain on Sunday and Tunisia on Sept. 4.
Huseyin Durmaz, coordinator of the Turkish delegation, said preparations were underway at a European port, with engineers, captains and activists working “day and night.” He said training sessions on psychology, media strategy and ethics were being held to prepare participants for the journey.
“People of every color, language, religion and race have come together for one purpose — to break the blockade on Gaza,” Durmaz said. He added that nearly 500,000 people applied to join, with delegates selected from 44 countries.
Durmaz warned that Israeli intervention could involve “humiliation and aggression,” but said the mission would continue despite risks.
Earlier in the day, at least 10 more Palestinians, including three children, died from malnutrition caused by a choking Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza.
In a statement, the ministry said that the new
fatalities from malnourishment brought the death toll since October 2023 to 332, including 124 children.
Famine has been confirmed in the Gaza
Governorate of the Gaza Strip, and is projected to expand to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis governorates by the end of September, according to global hunger monitor Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
Since IPC declared famine in Gaza, 54 people have starved to death, including nine children, the ministry added.
After 22 months of relentless conflict, the IPC said, over half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing starvation, destitution, and death.
Another 1.07 million people – over half the population – are facing emergency levels of acute food insecurity.
Israel has killed more than 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
