Iran will not negotiate under threats or coercion, the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeid Iravani said at the United Nations Security Council media stakeout on Friday. His remarks came as Britain, France and Germany triggered the "snapback" mechanism the previous day, which could reinstate UN sanctions on Tehran in 30 days. The "snapback" clause, part of a 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and world powers, allows the other parties to reimpose international sanctions if Iran fails to comply with the deal. Iravani condemned the move made by the three European countries, calling it unlawful and politically motivated. He also stressed that Iran would not negotiate under any coercion. Iravani further underlined that Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, as well as the path ahead, must be implemented faithfully and without political manipulation. Reaffirming Iran's commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, he said his country will firmly defend the right. The Iranian envoy also urged responsible members of the Security Council to reject the actions of the three European countries.
