GAZA, PALESTINE - AUG. 30: Hundreds of families were forced to flee their homes in eastern Gaza City on Saturday, Aug. 30, under intense Israeli artillery and gunfire, as the Israeli military advanced further into residential neighborhoods, worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian situation.
Israeli drones ordered civilians to evacuate to the south, but many refused, pointing to relentless strikes there and the absence of shelter.
The Gaza Government Media Office said moving south was “virtually impossible,” with shelters operating at more than 96% capacity and unable to absorb the 1.3 million people already displaced from Gaza City.
Residents from the Safatawi and Jalaa areas are heading towards the western parts of Gaza City and the southern Gaza Strip. The eastern part of the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood is now reported to be nearly empty after sustained Israeli strikes.
Many displaced Palestinians, having already endured multiple displacements from northern Gaza, have found no shelters or tents available for refuge. With scarce transportation and dire economic conditions, many cannot afford the cost of fleeing to the south. Numerous families have been forced to sleep on the streets in western Gaza.
Israel’s full blockade of Gaza, in place since early March, has created catastrophic conditions for its 2.4 million residents, leading to famine, widespread disease and the collapse of essential services.
Israel has killed around 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
