Instead of spending each single day in anxiety amid self-deceptive attempts, those like Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te should own up to their wrongdoings and go to the right side of history, according to a China Media Group (CMG) commentary published on Friday. An edited English-language version of the commentary by CMG's social media platform Riyuetantian is as follows: Through ways including threatening and intimidations, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities led by Lai Ching-te has been obstructing Taiwan compatriots' participation in the upcoming V-Day commemorations in Beijing, after a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday that Taiwan compatriots will be invited. Relevant Taiwan compatriots who communicated with Riyuetantian said that Lai Ching-te's obstruction moves showed his fears that the V-Day commemorations in Beijing will further debunk his fabrication of secessionist view of history, and stimulate a stronger sense of pride for the Chinese nation among Taiwan compatriots, which will destroy his false secessionist narrative. For quite some time, Lai purposely distorted historical facts about World War II with the aim of spreading his secessionist view of history. In a piece of writing he posted on Aug 15, the 80th anniversary of Japan's announcement of unconditional surrender in the war, Lai referred the date as the 80th anniversary of "the end of World War II on the Pacific front" and avoided expressions including "victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression". Joint commemorations of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression have become a highlight during the unstoppable trend of cross-Strait exchanges, with Taiwan compatriots being deeply moved by latest World War II movies including "Dead To Rights", and visiting memorial facilities on the mainland. Since July 1 when the mainland started exempting Taiwan residents who had never been to the mainland from paying application fees for their travel passes, the number of Taiwan residents who paid their first visits to the mainland increased by 33 percent month on month in July. The number of Taiwan residents who applied to mainland authorities for travel passes in July rose by 22 percent month on month -- with applicants under 45 accounting for 72 percent of the total, indicating growing willingness among Taiwan youth to visit the mainland, said the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council. Taiwan's young people said facts and figures have proven that the DPP authorities attempting to cut off cross-Strait exchanges is like "a dog barking to stop a train" or "a mantis stopping a chariot with its legs." History should never be forgotten, and the people's aspirations must not be defied. Instead of spending each single day in anxiety amid self-deceptive attempts, those like Lai Ching-te should see the ultimate trend clearly, own up to their wrongdoings, and go to the right side of history.
