SHOTLIST JAKARTA, INDONESIA (AUGUST 30, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) (NIGHT SHOTS) 1. VARIOUS OF PROTESTERS FACING RIOT POLICE, THROWING STONES AND FIRE CRACKERS JAKARTA, INDONESIA - AUGUST 30: Clashes between protesters and security forces continued in Jakarta on Saturday, Aug. 30, as public anger over a lavish housing allowance for lawmakers fueled demonstrations since Monday. Riot police fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse thousands of stone-throwing protesters gathered near the nation's parliament building. The unrest was triggered by a monthly housing stipend of 50 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately $3,075) granted to members of parliament, an amount nearly ten times the minimum wage in Jakarta. Demonstrators, consisting of students, workers, and activists, have demanded the immediate abolition of the allowance, which they label as wasteful and unjust amid economic hardships faced by most citizens and strict government austerity measures that have cut funding to education, health, and public works. The protests, organized by the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation and the Labor Party according to local media, have broader demands. Participants are also calling for an end to outsourcing practices, low wages, and mass layoffs. Key labor demands include tax reforms, such as raising the non-taxable income threshold and eliminating taxes on severance pay and bonuses. Furthermore, protesters urged the passage of a bill to confiscate assets in corruption cases, the approval of a new Labor Bill, and revisions to election laws ahead of the 2029 general elections. This wave of demonstrations in the capital follows recent violent protests in Central Java and Sulawesi over hikes in property taxes, indicating widespread public discontent. In response to the mounting pressure, the House of Representatives clarified that the controversial housing allowance for its 580 members would only be paid until October, as reported by The Jakarta Post. Despite this concession, the sustained protests underscore the deep-seated anger over perceived economic inequality. Writing by Sibel Uygun
