ALACHUA, Fla. — A woman was arrested early Friday after leading Alachua police on a wrong-way pursuit on U.S. Highway 441, officials said.

Officers responded around 1:49 a.m. Aug. 29 to reports of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes. Police attempted to stop the car after witnessing it driving in the wrong direction and showing signs of impairment.

The driver, identified as Christina Anne Thomas of Raiford, Fla., refused to stop, reaching speeds of 70 mph in a 30 mph zone and continuing in the wrong lanes. Officers used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit safely near NW State Road 235 and NW County Road 239.

Thomas was charged with fleeing and eluding law enforcement, reckless driving, DUI, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Methamphetamine and hypodermic needles were recovered from the vehicle.

Police reminded drivers to stay sober over the Labor Day weekend, stressing that impaired driving will not be tolerated.
