INTERVIEW WITH POLITICIAN SAMIM MOSLIH PARTICIPATING IN PROTESTMELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 31: Far-right groups calling on the Australian government to stop accepting immigrants staged protests in various cities on Sunday, Aug 31. Far-right demonstrators, organized via social media, gathered in city centers, primarily in Sydney and Melbourne, to protest the government’s immigration policies. The protesters demanded tighter border controls. In the Melbourne protest, groups carrying Australian flags marched with anti-immigrant banners. Tensions arose between far-right groups and Australians who hold weekly pro-Palestine demonstrations in city centers every Sunday following Israel’s attacks and massacres in Gaza. At times, these tensions escalated into clashes. Pro-Palestine demonstrators argued that there is no place for racism in a multicultural country like Australia. From early morning, police in Melbourne city center implemented heavy security measures and struggled to prevent the two groups from confronting each other. Mounted police were also deployed, tear gas was used, and some demonstrators were taken into custody. Samim Moslih, one of the politicians participating in the pro-Palestine demonstration, said Melbourne defended itself against fascism today. Moslih noted that one of the protesting groups incites violence, hatred, and racism, and he did not know what else the group stands for besides fascism. He added that they have a clear conscience and that everyone should have a clear conscience. The demonstrations, which began at 10:00 a.m. local time, ended about six hours later when police dispersed the opposing groups to different locations.
