Storyline: Southwestern Chinese city thrives on coffee tourism [Voice_over] Southwest China’s Pu’er City is making a name for itself as a summertime travel destination for coffee lovers and their families. Set amidst rolling, lush hills are acres of coffee plantations, many offering classes on coffee preparation and coffee tasting experiences. This farm says they’ve been receiving roughly 200 visitors daily since the start of the summer season, with families making up nearly 60 percent of the total. [Sound_bite] Tourist: "We came straight to this coffee farm from Kunming. This morning, we picked some mushrooms in the mountain, and then experienced coffee making." [Voice_over] The region’s coffee tourism sector also includes quaint hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops that have been popping up near the plantations. An entire coffee industrial chain is being developed with cafes and restaurants sourcing locally grown herbs and produce. [Sound_bite] Xiong Yingzi, barista: "The coffee beans we use in our store are locally grown. In the summer, our business is quite good. We have over a hundred customers every day." [Voice_over] According to officials from the Pu’er Coffee Association, the value of the city’s coffee output is expected to increase from its current 1.2 billion U.S. dollars, to about 2.8 billion in the next five years.
