A government building was set ablaze by furious demonstrators amid unrest in Indonesia.

Footage shows black smoke rising from the burning West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Provincial House of Representatives Building on Jalan Udayana in Mataram City on August 30.

Demonstrators breached the complex via the south gate, which had already been damaged during earlier protests in recent days.

As tensions escalated, protestors hurled chairs from inside the building and set them alight, with the flames eventually engulfing the main structure.

Muhamad Erwan, Head of Public Relations for the West Nusa Tenggara Regional House of Representatives, said: 'This afternoon's demonstration got out of control, causing the demonstrators to commit vandalism, including looting and arson. The DPRD building office is currently on fire.'

Firefighters struggled to access the building due to the large crowds blocking entry points.

Authorities confirmed that neither staff nor council members were present at the time of the incident.

The violence was triggered by the death of Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old delivery rider, who was fatally struck by a police riot truck during a demonstration last Thursday night.

Witnesses said a police tactical truck, speeding down the highway with sirens and lights activated, collided with Affan after he stumbled while running ahead of the crowd.

In Makassar, protesters stormed into the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) office and set the government building on fire. At least three council staff members were trapped inside the building and killed as the flames spread uncontrollably.

Public outrage erupted amid claims that 580 members of the House of Representatives have been receiving a monthly housing allowance of 50 million rupiah (approximately 2,270 GBP) since September 2024 - nearly ten times the city's minimum wage.

Activists are calling for an end to what they describe as excessive perks given to lawmakers in addition to their regular salaries.

As of Sunday, the wave of demonstrations had spread to multiple regions across Indonesia, with at least six reported deaths linked to the unrest.
