Car pushed 100ft down track in collision with train
A driver leapt from his moving car after it had been struck and dragged along the tracks by a freight train.
The collision occurred on the evening of Sunday, August 24, at the intersection of Rua Olindo Caetani and Rua Sargento Luiz Gonzaga Martins Ribas in Curitiba, Brazil.
CCTV footage captured the train's horn sounding at 7:24 pm, shortly before the car entered the tracks and was hit by the locomotive, which dragged the vehicle for roughly 100ft.
The driver, a 30-year-old man, managed to open the door and jump from the car while it was still being pushed by the train.
He sustained head injuries and was taken to Cajuru Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. His mother later told reporters that the car had stalled on the tracks before the impact.
Emergency services from SAMU and the railway operator Rumo responded to the scene.
Eyewitnesses told local media that the driver appeared to be intoxicated and left the area with friends before rescuers arrived.
The Traffic Police Battalion recorded the incident and began formal procedures.
In a statement, Rumo said the train engineer attempted to stop immediately but was unable to avoid the crash due to the size and weight of the locomotive.
The company noted that trains always have the right of way under Article 212 of the Brazilian Traffic Code, and failing to stop at a level crossing is considered a serious offence.
The Civil Police have been contacted for further comment, but have yet to issue an official statement.
