5. ROSA MIJANGO, PARTICIPANT AND PLAYER, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Spanish) SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR - AUG. 31, 2025: Young participants wearing water-soaked clothes clashed with fireballs on Sunday, August 31, during the Nejapa Fireballs Festival in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.

Known locally as 'La Recuerda', the event reenacts a battle between two groups of youths commemorating the 1917 eruption of the San Salvador volcano.

Participants wore wet costumes and masks as they threw gasoline-soaked rag balls wrapped in wire at each other.

The fiery battle took place before hundreds of onlookers, including locals and tourists, keeping alive a century-old tradition that draws visitors from across the country.

The tradition, dating back to 1917, is held each year on August 31 to celebrate the community’s survival and give thanks.
