2. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN ACTIVIST OMAR ASSAF SAYING:

“Today the message we received is the same as that of the entire Palestinian people: it is time for the world to act, and perhaps it is already too late. For 23 months, this ongoing crime of collective killing, starvation leading to death, and destruction of infrastructure must be stopped. It is time for the world to prove that values, justice, and human rights still exist. Otherwise, what is the purpose of the United Nations and all international institutions if they cannot stop this crime against the Palestinian people? The peoples of the world are standing with us, pressuring their governments to stop this unprecedented crime in modern times.”

RAMALLAH, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 01: Palestinians gathered outside the United Nations office in Ramallah on Monday, September 1, to protest hunger in Gaza and call on the international community to take action against Israel.

The protest was organized by Palestinian civil society groups, bringing dozens of demonstrators who carried banners denouncing Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza and criticizing international silence.

Activist Omar Assaf told Anadolu: “It is time for the world to act, and perhaps it is already too late. For 23 months, this ongoing crime of collective killing, starvation leading to death, and destruction of infrastructure must be stopped. It is time for the world to prove that values, justice, and human rights still exist. Otherwise, what is the purpose of the United Nations and all international institutions if they cannot stop this crime against the Palestinian people?”

He added that peoples around the world were standing with Palestinians, pressuring their governments to stop what he described as an unprecedented crime in modern times.

Since March 2, Israeli authorities have completely closed all Gaza border crossings, pushing the territory’s 2.4 million population into famine.

A UN-backed food security assessment has already confirmed famine in northern Gaza and expects it to spread further south by the end of September.

The Israeli army, which resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip on March 18 after breaking the ceasefire that took hold in January, has killed more than 63,000 people in Gaza since October 2023.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
