A family woke in shock when a huge python crashed through their ceiling and slithered across their living room.

The 15ft (5m) snake made a loud noise that the couple thought a burglar had broken into their home in Krabi, Thailand on August 30 shortly before 4am.

When they turned on the lights, they were horrified to see the massive serpent gliding across a table.

Footage shows the reptile's thick body stretching across the room as it slinked along the furniture, knocking over ornaments as it moved past a Buddha altar.

Husband Uthit Boonsong, 58, said: ‘I thought there was a thief so I came to check but there was no one. We keep hearing sounds of several items falling in the hall.'

The couple called animal rescuers, who arrived to evacuate the animal from the property.

The creature tried to hide under the table and avoid the team but it was too big and was easily dragged out with catching poles.

Team members pulled it out into the street outside, where it was measured.

The resident added: ‘It was too big. I did not know it could easily climb inside our home like that.'

The volunteers then drove away with the animal to be released back into its habitat.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
