This is the dramatic moment two people were swept away by crashing waves while trying to cross a walkway.

Footage shows the pair being knocked from their feet and into the water while a shocked crowd watches on.

The video was filmed on the Cíes Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Pontevedra in Galicia, Spain.

The people were attempting walk from Faro Island to Monteagudo Island,

Eduardo, a tourist from Portugal, said he remembered the weather forecast warning of rough seas - but assumed the two thought they could make it.

Lifeguards are said to have later rescued the pair on the opposite shore.

Eduardo said: "There was a bad weather forecast for the waves at the time. Everyone watching was so shocked and clearly worried about any possible damage from the accident. "

"But no one could really go in to help because it was so dangerous. Luckily, I saw the two people being rescued by lifeguards on the opposite shore."
