SOLDIERS AND PRIESTS ACCOMPANYING COFFIN DRAPED WITH UKRAINIAN FLAG LVIV, UKRAINE - SEPTEMBER 02: On Tuesday, September 2, a funeral was held in Lviv for Ukrainian MP and former Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy, who was killed in a shooting last week. The ceremony took place at St. George’s Cathedral, followed by burial at Lychakiv Cemetery.
Parubiy, a current MP from the “European Solidarity” party, was a key political figure who participated in both the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. He served as a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada across four convocations and held the position of Speaker between 2016 and 2019.
The murder occurred on September 30 in the old part of Lviv, where the attacker shot him eight times before fleeing. Authorities announced that the suspected gunman, a 52-year-old local resident, was detained on September 1. According to preliminary findings, the suspect had been recruited by Russian intelligence services.
World leaders reacted to the killing. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, and European Parliament President Roberta Metzola offered condolences and condemned the attack.
