Livonia, United States - August 28, 2025 A stolen vehicle pursuit ended in dramatic fashion Thursday when Livonia police deployed a grappler device to stop a fleeing driver. The chase, assisted by Michigan State Police, escalated along a busy highway. Officers used the grappler, which wraps a high-strength net around a vehicle’s rear axle and tire to force a controlled stop within seconds. Video footage shows the driver repeatedly trying to reverse and accelerate, attempting to dislodge the device. These desperate maneuvers ultimately ripped the rear axle from the vehicle, a rare outcome according to authorities. After the vehicle was immobilized, police arrested the driver along with two female passengers. All three were taken into custody without further incident. The Livonia Police Department noted that grappler deployments rarely result in this type of damage, emphasizing that it was the driver’s aggressive actions that caused the rear axle to be torn off.
