Mount Vernon, United States - August 31, 2025 Neighbors are reacting to dramatic body cam footage showing police rescuing a young girl and a group of people from a burning home in Mount Vernon early Sunday morning. Police reported that the fire broke out at 121 North Macquesten Parkway around 2:20 a.m. When officers arrived, they saw a woman and a young girl screaming for help from a second-floor window. According to police, heavy smoke and flames blocked their first attempt to reach them. Forced back by the conditions, the officers climbed onto the porch roof. From there, they were able to grab the young girl and hand her to another officer, who carried her to safety. Officials said the officers then went further onto the roof to rescue four additional people trapped inside. Neighbor Barry Crumbley, who alerted first responders, described the urgency of the moment. “I was like, ‘Yo, there’s babies in the house. Yeah, it’s a fire, but there’s babies in the house.’ I kept emphasizing that,” he said. Authorities confirmed that all of the residents were safely evacuated. The evacuees are now receiving housing assistance.
