Postmen row boat to deliver mail during floods in Thailand
Dedicated postmen delivered mail to residents despite heavy floods in central Thailand.
Employees from the Phichit Post Office rowed across the waist-deep deluge to deliver parcels to swamped homes along the swollen Yom River in Sukhothai province today.
Footage shows staff paddling on a boat as floods submerged swathes of a neighbourhood, leaving villagers stranded.
Post office chief Amnart Muangdit said the area sees frequent floods during the rainy season, but postmen battle to ensure the mail is delivered on time according to post office standards.
He said: 'Even under such conditions, the number of deliveries does not decrease. Residents continue to buy products online, or parcels are sent to parents and family members, including EMS and cash-on-delivery items.
'Some families have elderly members who require regular medication, so their children send express parcels to ensure the medicines arrive without delay.
'Thus, during the floods, postal workers have to use boats to traverse the swollen waters and deliver packages to the recipients.'
Mail man Amnart added that they make use of community drop-off points, with village headmen then alerting residents to collect their mail.
Postal worker Yuen Muangprang said he has braved rising water levels to deliver mail to 729 households recently.
Sukhothai was hit with floods after heavy rains from Typhoon Kajiki caused the Yom River to burst its banks.
The Thai Meteorological Department said on August 31 that Tropical Storm Nongfa was set to bring more downpours across Thailand in the following days.
