Crashed helicopter with American onboard found in Indonesian jungle
A missing helicopter with an American passenger onboard has been found after it crashed in a jungle in Indonesia.
The charred wreckage was discovered by rescue teams lying in a dense forest in South Kalimantan province on Wednesday afternoon.
Officers said one body had been flung some 100 metres from the aircraft, while more victims were still inside the cabin. No survivors were found.
Yudhi Bramantyo, operational director of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said: 'The helicopter was severely damaged by fire, so it will be necessary to dismantle the aircraft to confirm the number of victims inside.
'Currently, all elements of the ground search and rescue unit are being directed by the On Scene Commander (OSC) to the site to facilitate the evacuation process.'
The Airbus MBB BK117 D-3 (H145) helicopter, operated by Eastindo Air, lost contact just eight minutes after departing Gusti Sjamsir Alam Airport in Kotabaru on Monday. The aircraft, carrying eight people, was en route to Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan.
Authorities said there were three foreign nationals on board. They were identified as American citizen Mark Werren, Indian national Santya Kumar, and Brazilian passenger Claudine Quito.
More than 200 personnel were deployed to scour the 10-square-mile stretch of forest in Mantewe.
Officials said ground teams were dispatched following the discovery to aid in recovery efforts.
