Thousands gathered for student-led protests in Serbia on the first day of school, marking the deaths of 16 people killed in a roof collapse.

The furious crowd also used the demonstration to call for snap elections, aiming to remove President Aleksandar Vucic and his ruling SNS party from power.

Footage shows a sea of demonstrators assembled outside the old railway station in Belgrade on Monday, September 1, around 7 pm.

The rally, organised by high school and university students, came 10 months after a concrete canopy collapsed at a train station in Novi Sad.

The incident fuelled growing frustration over alleged government negligence and corruption, with protesters demanding accountability and political change.

In August, violent clashes broke out in the region as anti-government protests escalated into street confrontations. Authorities said dozens were injured, including 16 police officers.
