A rescue worker who went missing while evacuating villagers during floods was found dead in Thailand.

Thanawat Cheunwarun, 40, was swept away by surging waters while assisting trapped locals following heavy rain in Chiang Mai province on August 31.

Downpours from Typhoon Kajiki had caused the Mae Tuen River to swell, leaving residents stranded at home. However, Thanawat disappeared in the deluge during rescue efforts.

Authorities launched a search after the officer was reported missing, using boats to scour the river where he and his motorcycle were last seen.

Rescue teams discovered his body on Wednesday, September 3, drifting near a cattle pen in Ban Hong Ku Khao village, some five miles downstream from where he vanished.

Kritsayam Kongsatri, director of the Protected Areas Regional Office 16, said: 'We have notified the Mae Tuen Hospital and Mae Tuen Police Station to investigate. A post-mortem exam will be conducted to confirm the cause of his death.'

Vietnam has also recently been battered by Typhoon Kajiki, which made landfall on August 25, leaving at least seven people dead, one missing, and 34 others injured. Officials said more than 7,000 homes were damaged during the storm.

The Thai Meteorological Department on Sunday said that another storm, Tropical Storm Nongfah, was moving into Thailand as a strong low-pressure system.

Combined with an intensifying southwest monsoon, the weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across 43 provinces over the next one to two days.

Authorities warned residents to constantly monitor weather updates.
