China has stepped up emergency relief efforts in Afghanistan, delivering 200,000 U.S. dollars in humanitarian cash aid and pledging 50 million yuan (about 7 million U.S. dollars) in supplies after a powerful earthquake struck the eastern part of the country on Sunday. The 6.0-magnitude quake struck at 23:47 local time on August 31, with its epicenter located 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a depth of eight kilometers. Bao Xuhui, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan, handed over the cash assistance—provided by the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC)—to Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) President Sheikh Shahabudin Dilawer at a ceremony on Friday. Bao announced that the Chinese government will provide 50 million yuan in emergency humanitarian supplies, while the RCSC contributed 200,000 U.S. dollars in cash aid. He added that the Chinese embassy, Chinese institutions, and the Overseas Chinese Association in Afghanistan quickly mobilized donations and relief materials. The aid package includes urgently needed items such as tents, blankets, and food to support disaster relief efforts. He emphasized that these efforts reflect the deep friendship between the Chinese and Afghan people, and expressed confidence that, under the leadership of the Afghan government, those affected by the disaster will overcome challenges and rebuild their homes soon. Dilawer briefed on the earthquake’s impact and ongoing relief efforts, saying that "a friend in need is a friend indeed." He described China’s condolences and assistance as a tremendous support to the Afghan people, and expressed deep gratitude for the gesture. He stressed that the ARCS will ensure all donations and supplies are properly used, dedicating them entirely to disaster relief and reconstruction. The 6.0-magnitude earthquake has claimed 2,205 lives and left 3,640 others injured, according to the latest report from the ARCS. SHOTLIST: 1.
