The mosque, famous for its leaning minaret, was rebuilt as part of efforts to restore cultural heritage in Iraq’s northern city devastated during the fight against ISIS. One of Iraq's most important and famous historical mosques, Grand Al-Nuri Mosque is located in the center of the city of Mosul. Built in 1172 (566 AH) by Nureddin Zengi, the ruler of Mosul and Damascus, the mosque was named “Nuri” after him. The mosque, which has become a symbol of the city, is famous for its leaning minaret known as “Hadba.” During the Islamic State's occupation of Mosul between 2014 and 2017, the group's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the so-called “caliphate” from the pulpit of this mosque. In 2017, during the battle to liberate Mosul, the Islamic State blew up the mosque and its minaret.
