The protest at the facility, located at 1930 Beach St. in the western Chicago suburb, comes after Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson informed residents in a letter that Trump administration officials had notified her of a planned "large-scale enforcement campaign." According to the letter, the operation is expected to be underway soon and could continue non-stop for approximately 45 days. The two-story brick building is designated to serve as the "primary processing location" for individuals detained during the anticipated enforcement actions. In preparation, the windows of the ICE facility were boarded up on Wednesday night. Protesters, who have regularly demonstrated at the site for months, criticized the center's activities and the expected ramp-up in enforcement. They pointed to reports of inhumane conditions inside, including allegations that detainees are held for days without access to beds, blankets, or basic hygiene products. Demonstrators also invoked the Illinois Way Forward Act, state legislation that limits local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The planned influx of federal agents follows weeks of announcements from President Donald Trump and members of his administration. While the president has also mentioned potentially sending National Guard troops to Chicago to address crime. Security was heightened in the area surrounding the facility during Friday's protest. The building is expected to operate as a 24-hour processing center for the duration of the federal operation. Writing by Sibel Uygun
