US: Garnet Fire Continues To Rage As Crews Work To Protect Giant Sequoias
Fresno, United States - September 05, 2025 Fire crews made steady progress on the #GarnetFire today, increasing containment to 14%. Smoke remains visible near Patterson Bluff and Dinkey Creek as the fire continues to burn within its perimeter. While the fire is backing down the drainage, it remains active on the eastern side of Dinkey Creek. Firefighters continued constructing containment lines to the west along Secata Ridge and around the northern edge of the fire as a backup measure. Helicopters and super scoopers, specialized aircraft drawing water from Pine Flat Lake, assisted in suppression efforts when visibility allowed. The fire expanded slightly north of Indian Rock, but crews are using nearby roads as barriers and reinforcing them to prevent further growth. Strategic firing south of McKinley Grove Road is underway while improving the road system for potential use. Protective buffers around the Giant Sequoia trees are being strengthened in case the fire approaches the grove. In the northeast and east of Sawmill Flat, crews face steep and dangerous terrain with limited natural containment features. Fire has moved out of the Black Rock drainage into more accessible areas, allowing suppression efforts to continue along the active edge in the Long Meadow area. Top priorities remain protecting the McKinley Grove of Giant Sequoias and keeping the fire south of McKinley Grove Road. Firefighters are also working to safeguard Wishon Dam. Night aircraft are available for deployment if conditions permit.
