SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A 19-year-old man has been charged following an overnight crash that left a South Bend police officer with minor injuries, officials said.

The incident happened around 11:50 p.m. Sept. 3 when Officer DeVonte Spratt turned north onto Olive Street after a traffic stop. Police said a southbound vehicle driven by Jesus Briano slid across the center line and struck Spratt’s patrol car head-on. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Briano suffered minor injuries but declined medical treatment. Officer Spratt was evaluated for a hand injury. Police said Briano showed signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and unsteady balance, and declined sobriety tests. He was transported to a hospital for a blood draw before being booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.

Briano was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person and minor consuming alcohol.
