11. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SUAD AL-HABBASH SAYING:

“Here, like this house — in the beginning of the war there were displaced people here, and we hosted them. We raised them up and gave shelter to the displaced. Thank Allah, we fell short in nothing — not in organizations, not in anything, not in any help. But then we were shocked when we heard that the house was bombed. I don’t know why this happened. This was... I had my belongings here, my life in it. Everyone says: what now, what now? Each house had maybe twenty thousand worth of furniture, twenty thousand in every house. All of it is gone. We were not compensated, we got nothing at all, nothing at all. We are scattered — some by the sea, some at the clinic. I have a daughter who needs medicine, and now I cannot even find a bandage for her. What strength do I have left? Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs. What can I do with my hands? There is only destruction. The destruction is massive. May Allah compensate all the people. This neighborhood cannot be lived in anymore. The whole neighborhood cannot be lived in. Even people who try to come back to their homes cannot. Even the houses still standing — people cannot go inside them. As you can see, brother, there is nothing. Nothing at all. We look for leftovers among the rubble, anything useful, even wood, but there isn’t even wood to collect. We can’t even buy wood to cook. You see, there is nothing. Nothing at all. And what can I say… there is no power except through Allah. Each house — maybe you could build it again, but where is the means, where is the strength? We are left thirsty and broken.”

15. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) RAMADAN ABU MUSLIM SAYING:

“There are no sewage systems, no housing. There is no drinking water, nothing to help us, nothing to live on. Where are we supposed to live? Should we go back to live among the ruins, or what should we live on? There is no place to stay in, no shelter at all. When you look around, there is nothing anyone can find, no shelter for anyone to live in, no shelter for anyone at all. People say maybe there is hope, maybe there is something, even 10% — but this place you see, it needs everything. It is all destruction. The whole neighborhood is rubble, the whole life is rubble. Where can anyone live? The neighborhood is finished. No one can live here, no one, no one, no one…”

16. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) RAMADAN ABU MUSLIM SAYING:

“This wood is what allows us to cook, because everything now depends on firewood, and wood today is expensive. It is the only thing left that can provide food, the only thing keeping us alive. Of course, this is all from the destruction — praise be to God. And we pray to God that He changes this situation, Allah willing, so that we can live a decent life like other countries. This is what we managed to take from the rubble. As you see, we are sitting here gathering little pieces of wood, bits and scraps, and this is what we use. The whole area is like this, as you see. We collect it so we can live, so we can survive.”
KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - SEPTEMBER 6: Dozens of families who returned to the Al-Amal neighborhood and surrounding areas west of Khan Younis, following an Israeli army declaration of "safe green zones," were met with scenes of comprehensive destruction and a near-total lack of essential services, eyewitnesses told Anadolu on Saurday, Sept. 6.

Residents described a "catastrophic" scene where entire residential blocks had been leveled, leaving their homes uninhabitable. Their suffering was compounded by the continued presence of Israeli helicopters and surveillance drones, which witnesses said fired towards the area, alongside intermittent artillery shelling.

The return of displaced Palestinians was met with an absence of organized relief efforts or humanitarian aid, contrary to earlier assurances of safety and support.

A displaced Palestinian man from the Al-Araish area stated that they were facing great risk and surviving on minimal remnants like a little firewood and a few clothes. He reported that every house in the area was destroyed and pleaded for the world to stop the bloodshed and the war immediately.

“Our house is destroyed, our neighbors’ house — all our neighbors’ houses are destroyed. Not a single house is standing,” he said.

A Palestinian woman, whose home was destroyed, expressed shock at the bombing, stating that her life's belongings and savings, estimating tens of thousands worth of furniture in each home, were all gone without any compensation.

She highlighted the impossible living conditions, mentioning an inability to find even a bandage for her daughter who needs medicine and that the entire neighborhood is uninhabitable. She concluded that there is no means or strength to rebuild.

The scale of the devastation has forced residents to scavenge for basic necessities. Another displaced man Ramada Abu Muslim was seen searching through debris for scraps of firewood, which has become essential for cooking as it is the only way to prepare food.

He described a complete absence of infrastructure, including sewage systems, housing, and drinking water, leaving people with nothing to live on and nowhere to go. He emphasized that the entire neighborhood is finished and that no one can live there anymore, adding that they collect wood bits simply to survive.

The Israeli army has continued a widespread offensive on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, which has resulted in a significant number of Palestinian casualties and widespread devastation, placing the enclave at risk of famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a case at the International Court of Justice, where it is accused of violating the Genocide Convention in its military operations.
