Los Angeles, United States - September 06, 2025 09/06/2025 02:32 pm GMT-0700 NEWHALL PASS, Calif. – Firefighters mounted both a ground and aerial assault Saturday afternoon after a large mulch fire broke out near the 23100 block of Coltrane Avenue, just west of Interstate 5’s southbound lanes. The blaze was first reported shortly after 2:30 p.m., and arriving crews discovered a ¼-acre mulch pile burning intensely. Fire officials noted that mulch fires are particularly challenging to extinguish because the dense material can smolder and burn for extended periods of time. Helicopters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called in to support the operation, making several water drops over the course of an hour. Meanwhile, ground crews worked to dig into and soak the stubborn fire. As of 4 p.m., firefighters remained on scene continuing efforts to fully contain and cool the blaze. No injuries or structural threats were reported.
