Bird banding for conservation in the Australian bush.

Bird banding is a scientific method of safely capturing a bird and fitting it with a unique, numbered metal or plastic leg band to track its individual movements, migration patterns, and life history for conservation research. After measuring, weighing and banding the bird it is released. These bands provide data crucial for understanding bird populations and their habitats, and researchers encourage the public to report sightings of banded birds to national schemes, such as the Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme (ABBBS), to aid these efforts.

The bird banders in this video, Anthony and Don, have been mist-netting and banding birds in the Wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) woodland in southern Western Australia for over 20 years. The capture and recapture of individual birds yield information on migration and movement, survival rates and longevity, population dynamics and behaviour. All of this information is essential for managing the conservation of our native birds. The birds shown in order of appearance are a female Red-capped Robin, a White-browed Babbler and a Singing Honeyeater.
