China: Descendant of former US general celebrates enduring China-US bond
A descendant of a former U.S. general who significantly aided the Chinese people during their fight against Japanese aggression celebrated the enduring bond between China and the United States, while exploring key World War II sites in Tengchong, southwest China's Yunnan Province. During World War II, General Joseph Stilwell served as commander-in-chief of the U.S. armed forces in the China-Burma-India Theater and provided great support to the Chinese people's resistance against Japanese aggression. Throughout his 42-year military service, Stilwell made five visits to China and lived in the country for 12 years. On Friday, Catherine Cox, the great-granddaughter of General Stilwell, along with other family representatives visited Tengchong, retracing their ancestor's footsteps. Their first stop was the National Martyrs Cemetery, where they laid flowers at General Stilwell's statue and at the monument honoring fallen Allied soldiers. They paid solemn tribute to both Chinese and American servicemen who sacrificed their lives during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader fight against fascism. The group also toured the Western Yunnan Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall, revisiting the history of General Stilwell and the Chinese Expeditionary Force fighting side by side, and highlighting the courage and friendship that transcended national borders. We started our visit at the National Martyrs' Cemetery, built to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Tengchong. Next, I joined my family to lay flowers at General Stilwell's statue and take some photos together. In the cemetery, there's a Memorial to the Allied Soldiers, dedicated to the 19 American soldiers who lost their lives in the same battle. Today, they rest alongside their Chinese comrades in this beautiful place. It's so moving to be here, in the very places where they fought. I feel incredibly proud, and deeply touched by this enduring friendship."; Tengchong City, Yunnan Province, southwest China - Sept 5, 2025 [SHOTS OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 4.
