UK: London police arrest hundreds at pro-Palestine Action protest
London's Metropolitan Police made around 300 arrests on Saturday at a protest in central London in support of advocacy network Palestine Action. Nearly 1,500 demonstrators took to the streets of London on Saturday, calling on the British government to take actions to push for an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, stop the supply of weapons to Israel, and lift the ban on the proscribed group "Palestine Action". They held signs reading "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action" at the Parliament Square near the Westminster Abbey. The London police strengthened their deployment at the scene and made arrests of some demonstrators. Some protesters said they would refuse bail after being arrested. In July this year, the British government announced the ban on the "Palestine Action" under the Terrorism Act, making membership of or support of the group a criminal offense, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. In August, more than 500 people were arrested in another pro-Palestine Action protest, many of whom were over 60 years old. Some international organizations have slammed the large-scale arrests as "worrying". At present, the court has allowed the Palestine Action to appeal against the ban. The Palestinian death toll in Gaza had risen to 64,368, with over 160,000 others injured, since the latest round of the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted on Oct 7, 2023, said Gaza's health authorities on Saturday.
