Beautiful Splendid Fairywrens (Malurus splendens) (also known as Blue Wrens in Western Australia) are widely distributed across the Australian continent. Splendid Fairywrens are active and restless, rarely settling. They remain in family groups within their territory, defending it year-round. The family comprises a monogamous pair with one or more helper birds that assist in territory defence and rearing the young – an adaptation to the variable Australian climate where food is often scarce. Splendid Fairywrens are sexually promiscuous, with each partner mating with other fairywrens. Breeding males are brilliant blue and black, while breeding females have a blue tail and chestnut bill. Non-breeding males, females and juveniles are predominantly grey-brown with some bluish colouration on the tail and sometimes the wings. This family group comprised a breeding male and female, two immature females and a male in transitional plumage. They were enjoying the sun on the edge of North Lake after several cold and rainy days, preening one another.
