VARIOUS OF POLICE ARRESTING PROTESTERSMELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPT. 7: Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday, Sept. 7, to demand sanctions against Israel over its ongoing attacks on Gaza. Protesters called on the Australian government to cut diplomatic and trade ties with Israel, halt arms sales, and take concrete steps to stop the assault on Gaza. Speakers noted that the attacks had reached their 700th day, saying more than 64,000 Palestinians, including over 20,000 children, had been killed in Gaza, where most of the city lies in ruins. Demonstrators carried banners reading “Sanction Israel now,” “Stop arming Israel,” “Free Palestine, Free Gaza,” “Stop the genocide,” and “Jews against genocide, standing with Palestinians.” "We're here on the streets today protesting against Australia's complicity with not sanctioning Israel for the crimes that are being committed in Palestine on the illegal occupation of Palestinian land," said one protester Janine Short. She called on the Australian government to expel the Israeli ambassador and to sanction Israel. The demonstration took place as the genocide in the Gaza Strip is nearing the two-year mark. Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians since October 2023, according to Gaza authorities, leaving the enclave facing famine conditions. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
