China: Typhoon Tapah makes landfall in south China's Guangdong

Storyline: Tapah, the 16th typhoon of this year, made landfall in south China's Guangdong Province at about 8:50 Monday, according to the provincial meteorological observatory. The typhoon, with the maximum wind force near its center reaching 30 meters per second, churned ashore at Jiangmen City in the province. Meteorological authorities forecast that Tapah will continue moving northwest at about 20 km per hour, gradually weakening. As of 07:00 Monday, meteorological departments across Guangdong Province had issued one red alert for heavy rain, 14 orange alerts for typhoon, 40 yellow alerts for typhoon and 34 orange alerts for heavy rain. According to the emergency department of Guangdong’s Yangjiang City, it is expected that a medium to large wave process of 1.5 to 3 meters will occur in the nearshore waters of Yangjiang on Monday. A blue wave warning has also been issued for the nearshore waters. At 19:00 on Sunday night, Yangjiang City raised its wind prevention emergency response from level III to level II. All kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in the city issued notices to suspend classes, and more than 200 construction sites halted work. On Sunday morning, all 9,800 fishing boats in the city returned to port, and over 2,000 fishery personnel came ashore for safety. As of 18:00 on Sunday night, more than 60,000 people from dangerous areas in Yangjiang City had been evacuated. All the safe havens in the city have been opened. Typhoon Tapah is bringing strong wind and rain to many areas along the southern coast of China. Due to its influence, winds of force six (10.8-13.8 meters per second) or above will blow in most areas from the coastal areas in south China to the South China Sea on Monday.
