A ceremony was held in Taiwan’s Keelung city on Monday (Sept. 8) for the newly commissioned “Hualien CG1006” Coast Guard frigate. Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim also attended the ceremony. The newly commissioned "Hualien CG1006" frigate, manufactured by the CSBC Shipbuilding Corporation, is equipped with the Taiwan homemade NCSIST 2.75in rockets remote weapon station and is capable of sailing over 6,000 nautical miles. According to local media, the new vessel is part of the self-governing island's efforts to further strengthen its Coast Guard fleet in safeguarding sovereignty and maritime security, as Beijing has increased its military activities in and around the Taiwan Strait and the surrounding disputed South China Sea. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province. Taiwan, however, rejects that claim and has insisted on its independence since 1949.
