Belgium: Massive protest erupts in Brussels against Israel's Gaza attacks
Storyline: Large-scale protests in support of Palestine swept through Brussels on Sunday as tens of thousands of people demonstrated against Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in extensive civilian casualties and a severe humanitarian situation. Protesters called on the European Union (EU) to implement strong and practical measures to pressure Israel to cease its operations. The event drew over 100,000 participants, according to organizers. Beginning at around 14:00, participants gathered at Brussels-North railway station before marching approximately five kilometers to Place Jean Rey, near the EU headquarters. More than 100 organizations joined the demonstration, one of the largest of its kind in the city in recent months. Many protesters wore red, a color organizers said symbolizes "drawing a red line for Gaza", and held red cards as a symbolic dismissal of politicians supporting Israel's military actions. This is another large scale pro-Palestinian protest in Brussels since the previous one on June 15. Facing growing public pressure, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib said on Sept 2 that Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine during this month's United Nations General Assembly and will impose strict sanctions on the Israeli government. However, demonstration organizers insist that both national and EU authorities must do more, and they vowed to maintain pressure until tangible changes occur.
