Carthage, Tunisia - September 07, 2025 The Global Sumud Flotilla arrived in Sidi Bou Said on Sunday, September 7, marking the final planned stop before continuing to Gaza in the coming days. The flotilla set out from Barcelona, Spain, at the start of the month but encountered storm-related delays along the way. Prominent figures participating include climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and four Italian parliamentarians. Tunisian activists are preparing to join hundreds of volunteers from around the world in an effort to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza, where a famine has been declared. Many Tunisian participants are part of the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, one of four organizations coordinating the Global Sumud Flotilla. Donations from across Tunisia on August 22 enabled the quick purchase of vessels for the mission. The initiative comes amid Israel’s nearly two-year campaign of bombing, maiming, sniping, and starving Palestinians, which has motivated direct action from Tunisian activists. Ghassan Boughdiri, a member of the organizing committee, told Al Jazeera: “I can’t share the number of boats because it is confidential information, but we’re good when it comes to boats. We have the exact number we need.”
