Furious protesters throw mud at office of 'corrupt' flood control contractor
Furious protesters hurled mud at the office of a flood control contractor accused of corruption in the Philippines.
Demonstrators gathered at the gates of St Gerrard Construction in Pasig City, Metro Manila, denouncing what they described as 'corrupt contractors' behind questionable public infrastructure projects across the country.
The company, owned by Sarah and Curlee Discaya, has been linked to several allegedly irregular flood mitigation initiatives.
Footage shows the enraged protesters throwing mud and spray-painting slogans, including the word for 'thief' in Filipino, on the perimeter wall of the property on Thursday, September 4.
The group said in a statement: 'Every peso pocketed by the Discayas and corrupt politicians translates to another family submerged in floodwaters, another farmer's livelihood destroyed, another community displaced.
'The government itself has become a disaster, turning public funds meant for protection and resilience into cash cows for plunder.'
Police said the group had not secured a permit to hold the protest.
An official added: 'With or without a permit, we always implement our maximum tolerance policy. However, in situations like this, we must not allow such acts, as they may constitute malicious mischief.'
Earlier this week, Sarah Discaya confirmed before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee that she owns 28 luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Maybach, Bentley, and Mercedes G63, among others.
She denied involvement in so-called 'ghost projects' and said she began securing contracts from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in 2012. She also revealed she owns nine construction firms.
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr has ordered a full audit of the DPWH flood control initiatives, along with lifestyle checks on officials and public disclosure of projects.
The directive came after reports of corruption, ghost projects, and disproportionate contract awards linked to flood control programmes since 2022.
Local media reported that more than 6,000 flood control projects worth 350 billion PHP (approximately 4.9 billion GBP) lacked essential details, raising concerns over transparency in government infrastructure spending.
At least 15 contractors are now under investigation after cornering a combined 545 billion PHP (approximately 7.63 billion GBP) program budget.
