Thailand's beloved oldest hippopotamus marked her 60th birthday with a festive celebration at a zoo in Chonburi.

Mae Mali was treated to a large birthday cake and a chorus of well-wishers as she turned a year older at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo on September 8.

Footage shows visitors singing 'Happy Birthday' as she tucked into a feast of her favourite fruits, including dragon fruit, watermelon, apples, papaya, bananas, sweet potatoes, grapes, carrots, and fresh grass.

Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy said the celebration also featured various activities for zoo-goers, including a message-writing station, an exhibition about Mae Mali's life, and interactive games.

A local cosmetics company also donated 100,000 Baht (2,326 GBP) to support Mae Mali's healthcare.

Mae Mali was sent to Dusit Zoo in Bangkok from Dierenpark Tilburg in Tilburg, the Netherlands, on June 8, 1967, when she was only a year old.

She was relocated to Khao Kheow Open Zoo on December 18, 2018 and, over six decades, has given birth to 14 offspring.

Zookeepers said Mae Mali is currently in good health and has the chance to set a new record as the world's longest-living hippopotamus if it reaches the age of 65.

The world's oldest known zoo hippo is named Bertha, who was kept at the Manila Zoo in the Philippines. She died in captivity at 65 years old.
