Plane slides off runway while landing during typhoon in Hong Kong
A plane slid off the runway while landing during a typhoon in Hong Kong.
The HK Express flight UO235 from Beijing Daxing International Airport reportedly veered off course while taxiing on Monday morning, September 8.
At the time, the No 8 Southeast Gale and Amber Rainstorm Warning were in effect as Severe Tropical Storm Tapah brought strong winds and heavy rain to the city.
Officials said the Airbus A320 touched down safely at Hong Kong International Airport around 10:46 am but later struck signage on the grass embankment. Passengers reported seeing smoke coming from the landing gear.
Footage from inside the aircraft shows it manoeuvring on the tarmac, followed by video of holidaymakers disembarking.
One traveller said: 'The wind pushed the plane off course, affecting the landing gear. I commend the pilot for landing safely under difficult conditions.'
The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and crew. No injuries have been reported.
Authorities said the north runway reopened at around 12:15 pm. An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing, and the aircraft is undergoing inspection.
