A suspected Chinese scam centre boss was arrested while eating dinner at a restaurant in Bangkok.

Ou Weiming was detained by police in the middle of a meal with other alleged fraudsters on August 16.

Police Major General Chotiwat Lueangwilai, commander of the Investigation Division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the Ou was the head of a call centre gang that withdraws money from mule accounts.

He said: 'The operation was launched after officers learned about scammers who sent messages claiming a package was damaged and offering 500 baht in compensation.

'The suspects tricked a victim into making two separate bank transfers totalling 2.7 million baht. The gang then moved across various areas to withdraw the money, including Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.'

He added that the financial trail showed the total cash withdrawn by the call centre gang exceeded three million Baht believed to be from other scam victims.

Police warrants have been issued for 11 suspects, and five individuals have been arrested.

The raid was part of a wider crackdown on call centre scams across Thailand.
