China: AI powers new era in Chinese manufacturing
Storyline: AI powers new era in Chinese manufacturing [Voice_over] In China, artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era of manufacturing by facilitating smarter, more efficient, and data-driven operations. This manufacturing line in east China’s Hangzhou City claims to be the first in the world to use AI in the production of gallium oxide, a fourth-generation semiconductor material. Here, an advanced AI system works to calibrate the optimal growth conditions for crystals at a blistering 1,900 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the precision of the automation, engineers say their yield rate has increased from 70 percent to beyond 90. [Sound_bite] Huang Haotian, director, Crystal Materials Department, Fujia Gallium: "The AI system identifies visual data from the production process and recognizes parameter information. It then assesses the crystal growth status, determining whether the crystal is in a relatively cold or hot state. Based on this judgment, it adjusts process parameters, such as regulating temperature or furnace pressure." [Voice_over] In northern China’s Tangshan, meanwhile, AI technology has pushed traditional steel mills into the digital era, signaling a broader shift toward smart and data-driven steelmaking. [Sound_bite] Sun Yanguang, deputy chief engineer, China Iron and Steel Research Institute Group: "The system integrates over a dozen production processes into a single, managed workflow. It begins by tracking the initial molten iron, directing it to the appropriate steel mill, and matching it to the correct customer order and batch. It then manages whether the material is sent to inventory or directly to the rolling line. This end-to-end management has led to monthly cost savings of 2.65 million U.S. dollars." [Voice_over] With China’s annual crude steel output now topping 1 billion tons, those in the industry believe AI holds huge potential to optimize efficiency and reduce operational costs for steelmakers.
