Demonstrators gathered along the route to oppose the participation of the Israel-Premier-Tech team, owned by Sylvan Adams, a known associate of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Protesters waving Palestinian flags chanted slogans including “This is not a war, it is genocide” and “Freedom for Palestine.” The stage was disrupted after a tree fell near the cyclists’ path, and crowds entered the course near the finish line. Similar protests forced an early end to the 11th stage in Bilbao on Sept. 3, three kilometers before the finish, over security concerns. Two days ago, during the 15th stage in Galicia, a protester entered the race route at the start, causing crashes involving Spanish cyclist Javier Romo and Belgian rider Edward Planckaert. Activists also hacked a live radio broadcast of the race to play music. Ten people were arrested for public disorder during those demonstrations. La Vuelta, marked by anti-Israel protests this year, will conclude in Madrid on Sept. 14, where civil society groups are expected to hold larger demonstrations. Israel has killed more than 64,500 Palestinians in a brutal offensive in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and pushed the entire population into famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
