Storyline: Chinese matcha steeped in success [Voice_over] It's been the drink of the summer again this year-matcha- and in China, production of the bright green tea is soaring. As a major matcha-producing country, China is poised to produce over 5,000 tons of it this year. And not just to drink. The variety of matcha-flavored foods- things like chocolates, cakes and ice creams- is also expanding. But at this café in Shanghai, it's all about matcha beverages. [Sound_bite] South Korean consumer: "I like green tea. So, I ordered this green tea. It's bitter and sweet." [Voice_over] Much of the country's matcha is produced in Zhejiang Province, which according to agriculture officials, has become one of the world's largest matcha production bases. Recent data shows that last year the province's raw tea output exceeded 278 million U.S. dollars. Matcha originated in China but has been adopted in Japan and is typically used during Chado, the Japanese tea ceremony. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
